Where a chilled round comes apart
Multi-drop food distribution is harder than long-haul freight for one reason: the load gets opened again and again. Four things follow from that, and they come up in every conversation we have with a caterer, a butcher or a fishmonger in Malta.
The door lets the heat in
Twelve drops means twelve door openings on a July morning. The box recovers slowly and nobody is watching the curve in between. Whether it was the unit, a worn door seal or a stacking habit blocking the airflow, you cannot tell afterwards.
A rejection you cannot contest
The customer says the load came in warm. Without a temperature record tied to a time and a place, their word wins, and the credit note comes out of your margin.
HACCP paperwork written from memory
The driver fills in the temperature sheet at the end of the shift, from what he remembers of a run that started at half four. That is a recollection, not a record, and an inspector can tell the difference.
The unit that quit at 03:00
A fridge fails in the yard overnight and you find out at 07:00, when the van is being loaded. By then the stock is gone and the day is already behind.

The box is down to -18 °C and the frozen stock goes in. The overnight trace is already on screen, so you can see the unit held through the night and nothing gets loaded into a box that failed quietly at three in the morning.

The door opens, the reading climbs 3 °C, the door closes and recovery begins. Nothing on the van senses the door. What you are reading is the shape of the curve, and that shape is what a drop looks like. It stays inside the tolerance you set, so no alert fires, and the record keeps all of it anyway.

The box stays above threshold past the sustained-duration window, and the alert goes to the transport manager and the driver at the same time, in time to close the door and move on. You choose the recipients per alert. There is no acknowledge step and no ladder behind it, so everyone on the list gets the same message.

The office pulls the Temperature report for that vehicle and that window. Time-stamped readings, min, max and average, any excursion with how long it lasted, and the GPS position against each reading. The PDF goes back by email and the conversation ends.

One sensor per compartment, and a tracker that can read it
A sensor reports the temperature at one place in the box, so a van running chilled at the front and frozen at the back needs one in each. Wired probes read to ±0.5 °C and take a tamper-resistant mounting: main cargo area, near the doors, and on the return air if you want to see how the unit itself is coping. Bluetooth sensors are quicker to fit and to move between vehicles, and accuracy varies by model. Either way the tracker has to support sensors, so check the model before ordering.

The plan, the control points and responsibility for them remain yours, and the record is what we hand you to defend them with.
In the temperature curve. There is no door input on the tracker and no door sensor in our range, so a door opening is something you read rather than something the van reports. You get a reading every 30 seconds while the van is moving, and a drop looks like a sharp climb followed by a slower recovery. Read against a geofence entry at the customer, the two together tell you which door was open and roughly how long for. If you need the door itself logged as an event, we are not the ones to claim it.
You pull the Temperature report for that vehicle and that time window, which takes a minute or two, and send the PDF. It shows every reading between load-out and the drop, the minimum and the maximum, and any point where the box went out of range along with how long it stayed there, each one against a GPS position. Most disputes stop there, in either direction. Sometimes the report shows the load did go warm, and then you have found a real problem in your own operation instead of arguing about somebody else's.
Yes, with one sensor per compartment. A sensor reports the temperature where it sits, so a single probe in a partitioned body tells you about half the van. Each compartment then gets its own threshold: 8 °C at the top end for fresh produce, -15 °C for frozen, 2 °C at the bottom end for beverages, and 0 °C where you are protecting produce from freezing. Bluetooth sensors are the usual choice for this, because they are quick to fit and to move, and the tracker in the vehicle reads them at roughly ten metres.
No. A tracking link carries the live position of the vehicle and nothing else, so a customer watching one sees the van approach and learns nothing about the load, the driver or the rest of your round. When a customer wants the temperature, you send them the report for their delivery, which is the better document to be holding anyway because it has a time and a position against every reading.
